Protirelin, originally known as thyrotropin-releasing hormone, is a tripeptide hormone secreted by the hypothalamus. The hormone was first purified and synthesized from the hypothalamic tissue of sheep and pigs in the late 1960s. Its main function is to act on the anterior pituitary gland to stimulate its secretion of thyrotropin (TSH) and prolactin (PRL).
